Mapinduzi B Water Supply

EWB-BPC has been working in Mapinduzi since 2011. Before EWB-BPC’s involvement, Mapinduzi’s water supply system consisted of a borehole, old mechanical pump and storage tank. The pump was undersized to utilize the entire system and was therefore inefficient. The generator powering the pump was fueled by petrol, which was very expensive and there was often not enough money to buy fuel to pump water. EWB-BPC identified a more sustainable alternative to increase the availability of clean water to the community, converting the system to solar energy.

Over the years, a test water catchment system was built and technical support was provided to assist in the repair of the existing water supply system. In October 2017, EWB-BPC installed a solar-powered, submersible pump and new generator to eliminate the cost of fuel and the burden of transporting fuel down dirt roads from the capital. Although the initial cost of solar equipment is relatively high, the overall maintenance cost of the system will be drastically reduced. Additionally, EWB-BPC designed a rainwater catchment system for the Mapinduzi dispensary which was built with labor and materials donated by the community.
