MASS Design Group will be giving a talk tomorrow night (Sept. 20) about construction and design best practices in developing communities. Feel free to drop by if you’re interested. The event will be at 60 Oxford Street, Room 330 in Cambridge, at 6PM. Here is the abstract of the talk:
MASS Design Group is a nonprofit design studio with offices in Boston, MA and Kigali, Rwanda. For the past five years we have worked to create a new practice of architecture that promotes dignity, opportunity and health. Our projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa, in Haiti, and in the United States have proved the effectiveness of best-practice design to help otherwise under-resourced communities thrive. This lecture will introduce our mission as a firm through several case studies: The Butaro Hospital, Doctor’s Housing and Shareholder Housing, the Mubuga Primary School, the Ilima Primary School and the GHESKIO Cholera Treatment Center. The lecture will focus on local construction techniques, material selection, and each buildings impact on the communities they serve.
